Qur'anic exegesis (Tafsir) is one of the most fundamental branches of Islamic sciences, aiming to understand the verses of the Holy Qur'an through their linguistic, contextual, narrative, and rational dimensions. Correctly reading and understanding the Qur'an, which serves as a guide for Muslims, yields profound results at both individual and societal levels. Therefore, Tafsir education is not merely an academic specialization but a fundamental need encountered by every Muslim on their journey of knowledge. In DİDAR Academy's second-year curriculum, Tafsir texts hold a central place; students engage directly with classical sources, starting from Tabari's Jami' al-Bayan to Razi's Mafatih al-Ghayb and Qushayri's Lata'if al-Isharat.
When beginning the study of Qur'anic exegesis, it is first necessary to acquire knowledge of methodology (usul). The methodology of Tafsir determines how a verse should be read, which narratives (riwayat) should be consulted, and where the boundaries of rational exegesis (dirayat tafsir) are drawn. Reading texts without methodological knowledge can lead to interpretations detached from context or misplacement of narratives. At DİDAR, Tafsir education begins after the completion of the Arabic preparatory period, as Tafsir texts require proficiency in the Arabic language. Students first strengthen their language skills, then proceed to reading the texts.
Classical Tafsir sources represent different approaches. Imam Tabari's Jami' al-Bayan is one of the most comprehensive examples of narrative exegesis. The reasons for revelation (nuzul), and the views of the Companions (Sahaba) and their successors (Tabi'in) are presented with a rich accumulation in this work. Razi's Mafatih al-Ghayb, on the other hand, is a comprehensive commentary that delves into the depths of rational exegesis, also covering theological and philosophical issues. Qushayri's Lata'if al-Isharat is an important representative of the spiritual refinement (Sufi) exegesis tradition. The sequential reading of these sources allows students to recognize different methods and schools of thought within the science of Tafsir.
The discipline of text reading in Tafsir lessons consists of the following stages: first, the text is silently studied, then read and discussed under the guidance of the instructor, and finally, the student takes their own notes and shares them with the discussion group. This process enables the student to transition from being a passive listener to an active scholar. Paying attention to the wording, metaphor, analogy (qiyas), and inference (istidlal) of the verse are fundamental steps in Tafsir study.
Today, various translated and summarized works related to Qur'anic exegesis are available. These can be useful at an introductory level; however, true depth is gained by directly reading the classical texts. Translations offer an understanding filtered through the interpreter; the original text, on the other hand, confronts the student directly with the source. DİDAR Academy's emphasis on classical texts in Tafsir education is a practical reflection of this principle.
The relationship between Islamic theology (Kalam) and Qur'anic exegesis is also considered in the DİDAR curriculum. Kalam texts such as Maturidi's Kitab al-Tawhid and Nasafi's al-Aqa'id help students correctly position theological issues when reading Tafsir. Tafsir is not merely a matter of language and narrative; it also encompasses dimensions of belief, ethics, and law. This holistic approach enables students to integrate the Qur'an into every aspect of their lives.
In the study of Qur'anic exegesis, the reasons for revelation (nuzul asbab) and the distinction between Meccan and Medinan verses also hold an important place. Knowing the context in which a verse was revealed is a prerequisite for correctly understanding its ruling and scope. In Tabari's narrative exegesis, this information is presented richly; students learn both the wording of the verse and its historical context together. Weekly book analyses and academic seminars are also regularly conducted at DİDAR as extracurricular extensions of Tafsir education.
To succeed in Qur'anic exegesis, patience, consistency, and correct source selection are essential. Students should progress without haste, learning the methodology and maintaining regular contact with the texts. Considering the context, wording, and ruling of each verse together transforms superficial reading into deep understanding. In DİDAR's four-year curriculum, Tafsir lessons deepen with a different source each year; this allows students to become acquainted with narrative, rational, and spiritual refinement (Sufi) exegesis traditions. Every young person who wishes to understand the Qur'an on their journey of knowledge can achieve this goal with a solid Tafsir education.
